Databases – some full text articles, etc. and citation information about articles you can find in our library and online

·        Included Databases

§         Infotrac: Citations from thousands of magazines, journals and newspapers, many in FULL-TEXT. Includes the current year of the New York Times, excellent coverage of current events, health, business and much more.

§         FirstSearch: Specialized databases, many with FULL-TEXT periodical articles, in fields from Accounting to Zoology. Includes WorldCat (access to the book catalogs of the world's libraries), and WilsonSelect (magazines and journals)

§         Michigan Newspapers: Full-text coverage of recent articles from the Detroit News, plus selected out-of-state papers.

§         Electric Library: Full-text from more than 100 magazine, newspaper, book, and transcript sources, plus maps and pictures.

§         SIRS Discoverer is a general-knowledge full-text database aimed at younger readers.

§         World Geography: current country profiles, including news, statistics and graphics.

 

Special Features:

·        MeL (Michigan e-Library) – this is a website that lets you search a series of databases from an off-campus site (as long as you are a Michigan resident)

 

 

A-9 – A Web Search Engine

Contents: Search engine with history of searched, visited and viewed web pages

Special Features: This “Google-powered” website used Google’s web searching techniques with Amazon’s referencing knowledge to bring a site that students can search and always have a record of where they went and when they went there.

Caveat: You need to have an www.amazon.com log-in.  Don’t worry, it is free.

 

 

The Drudge Report

Contents: A link to various headlines from national and world newspapers.  The site also contains links to most syndicated columnists (middle column), both the AP and Reuters news wires (search engines), various world and national newspapers (left column).

Special Features: This site can link you to the world’s news and even audio BBC broadcasts.  It is invaluable for locating up-to-date news and information.

Caveats: The linked headlines can sometimes lean towards the right, but it has been named by reputable think-tanks to be one of the most moderate (middle of the road) news sources.

 

 

Project Gutenberg

Contents: A free online resource of various texts that have outlived their copyright date (80 years or older). 

Special Features: There are links in many languages for many texts.  It is a great place to find some reading.

 

 

About.com Website

 

Address:  http://www.about.com/

Contents:  This site features subject listings about a variety of subjects as well as hyperlinked web resources on each subject.  You can look at it as a web encyclopedia with media links.

Special Features:  Information on about anything.

Caveat:  Sometimes can be too general as far as the information given and too confusing as far as where you issue is listed in the subject list.

 

 

 Free Database and Reference Webpage

Contents: A list of links for free online databases.  If you follow the “Free Reference” link at the top of the page, you can view links to free online reference material.

Special Features: Numerous links to web resources, web journals and articles that can bee seen online through various schools, institutions and government pages, you can view links to free online reference material

Caveat: You will have to evaluate the credibility of each source.  Don’t analyze the article for credibility; try to establish credibility through analyzing the website or database.   Look for institutional support of some kind.
