How to Double-space a document

Move your cursor to “Format” and select “Paragraph”

 

 

When the “Paragraph” window appears, locate the “Line spacing” drop down box and select “double”

 

 

Click “OK”

How to Set Page margins and orientation

Click on “File” and select “Page Setup” on the drop down menu

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The margins appear in the six drop down boxes and can be set by clicking the arrows on each box or typing in the numerical inch value.  The orientation of the page can also be set by clicking the picture indicating “Portrait” or “Landscape.”

 

 

The “Page Setup” window is also the place you can add a border and set line numbers.

To Save a File in a different place, under a different name, or as a different file

Select “File” and then select “Save as” in the drop down menu

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When the pop up menu appears, you can change the location of the location of the file in the “Save in:” drop down box and change the file name in the “File name:” drop down box. The file type can be changed in the “Save as type:” drop down menu.  You should save all word processed documents as a “RTF” or “Rich Text Format.”

To alter the header/footer

Select “View” on the standard toolbar and “Header/Footer” from the drop down menu.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Header/Footer toolbar (which will pop up) has quick icons to “Insert Autotext” (of which none are MLA formatted) or add page numbers (the little # icon).  The cursor will be in the box above your document titled “Header” (located at the top of the page).

 

 

The footer can be accessed by clicking the down cursor key on your keyboard or by scrolling down with your mouse.  The

same toolbar will be present with all the same features.

To Insert page numbers

Select “Insert” and then select “Page Numbers”

 

 

You can select the position or the place the number will appear (MLA is upper right hand corner).  This goes directly into your header, so you can also add your name in the Header to complete your formatting.  You can select the alignment and whether or not your want the first page to include the page numbers.
