OVERDUE FOR AN OVERHAUL--in progress

Teaching Philosophy

I see my most important task as helping students feel empowered in the world through increased confidence in their reading and writing abilities; I try, therefore, to relate assignments to the rest of their lives.

I don't know which one way students learn best, so I give assignments that accommodate different learning styles. I also try to use at least two different ways of teaching in any one class period–lecture, reading, group work, impromptu writing, prepared writing, film viewing

Teaching Innovation

I am offering a Literature class (English 231–Poetry and Drama); the text I am using contains a section with poetry and related works of art. Students seem to enjoy the opportunity to examine these works together.

Professional Activity

I usually try to write every essay I ask my students to write, but until this semester I hadn't written an English 132 research paper. I decided to write one–using the same time-line as my students: a comparison of Raisin in the Sun and Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. I think students appreciated both the process and my document. I found it easier than usual to sympathize with them in the struggle to reduce vast amounts of material to manageable proportions.
