Text Box: Text Box: As the 2005-2006 academic year winds to an end, I cannot help but think back to the beginning of my tenure as Senate Representative for the English Division. Elected in 2004, I used my first year as representative to observe the goings-on and learn from seasoned colleagues. By the start of my second year, I became more comfortable with my role. Under the mentorship of Chris Briggs and the supportive guidance of Nancy Widman and Carole Sloan, I became less green, perhaps even a shade of yellow.
Eventually, I found it less daunting to voice important concerns raised by colleagues in Text Box: the English Division, particularly in matters involving teaching and student learning. The Director of Supplemental Instruction, for instance, is now a position that is selected under advisement by the Retention Advisory Committee rather than just appointed by the VP of Academic Education.
In my second year , I have realized an increased appreciation for the work of the Senate since I’ve had to record much of it. Being elected Secretary again, I expect that appreciation to increase by double next year.

Text Box: Looking Back
Text Box: Looking Forward
Text Box: With the College undergoing significant administrative changes, the Senate looks forward to assisting the next college president with the transition to the shared-governance environment of HFCC. Having the experienced Shannon Scanlon, who was just re-elected Senate Chair, corresponding with the next president, Dr. Mee, over Text Box: the summer, will surely contribute to a smooth transition.
As the representative for the largest Division at the college, with 40 full-time faculty, I hope to improve my communication of Senate matters. This web log is an attempt to do such.
Furthermore, I seek to improve my understanding of the
Text Box: relationship between the Union,
the Senate, and the Administration; and, in doing so, I hope to improve my ability to serve as representative for the English Division.
