Teaching Philosophy

I am committed to teaching all students, regardless of their background or level of preparation. I have learned that the use of writing to explain cultural experiences and perspectives is a powerful tool of communication between ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups. The study of language is essential to higher education. Competence in reading and writing empowers students and prepares them for greater success in life while reading literature exposes them to other world views and cultural perspectives.

Diversity is important in my classroom. Because my goal is to create a positive learning environment in which all students can achieve, reading and writing assignments focus on diverse cultural experiences and social issues. I encourage students to view reading and writing as a process, not merely as a product. Course content is selected for its relevance to contemporary life; therefore, textbook materials are supplemented with articles and essays about current events. I think students should be exposed to a variety of ideas, issues, and writing styles in order to understand that reading, writing, and critical thinking are life skills, not test-taking skills. My hope is that at the end of the semester students will feel more positive about reading and writing, be improved readers and writers, and be motivated to achieve their academic goals.
